RESCUE TOPIC - POLITICALLY CORRECT?

In the last year it has become politically correct to talk about RESCUE, ANIMAL ABUSE,

and ANIMAL RIGHTS, as clever breeders realized, that they could boost their sales, if they

would cause a tear in the eye and the ache in the heart of the potential buyer. It has become

obvious to some persons, that the customer's trust is enhanced by the belief that the breeder

is actively engaged in the Rescue and Adoption work and truly cares for the animals he breeds.
It came to the point, that recently on some of the big RESCUE ORGANIZATIONS WEB SITES,

many breeders have signed in their names as the sponsors, at the same time quietly advertising

their kennels and dogs for sale! How many of these individuals are really doing any rescue work,

helping with the adoption, or becoming foster parents for the animals in need is a big question,

that will never be truthfully answered, as there is NO WAY of knowing. The unhappy reality is

that placing advertisements for the kennels and dogs for sale on the RESCUE WEB SITE is

unethical and possibly an answer in itself.

RESCUE MUST START AT HOME
Don't even talk to me about the rescue, if you do not insist on the contract, that protects your

dog in the first place, and are unwilling to accept the returns.
Even if you proclaim to do it all now, what will happen when you, the breeder, change the breed,

move away, or decide that you are OUT OF DOGS?
Will you still keep in touch with the owners of the dogs bred, sold or even given away by you?
It would make an enormous difference in the number of people breeding dogs for profit, if they

would have take upon their shoulders the burden of having to accept any and all dogs they have

ever sold at any point in the life of the dog for any reason. The results of overproduction, poor

choice of buyers, lack of proper screening, poor health, genetic and temperament problems would

be seen immediately. It is up to the Breed Clubs to enforce such policy for their members by adding

it to the Code of Ethics. Breeders must change in order to continue their hobby of breeding, or will

have to cope with the guilt of watching the destruction of their own animals.
I was once a witness to the conversation, that a new owner had with the breeder of her newly

purchased dog.
- "Well, the dog I just bought from you, has an eye problem and bites me whenever I try to pet him.

I went to the vet, and he told me that the dog suffers from the night blindness. Could I have an

exchange or get a refund?"
- "That's just tough sh..t, lady." - Answered the breeder.
- "I take no returns."
- "But you promised..."
- "Lady, if I would take all the dogs back that people want me to, or give them the refunds, I would

have to quit the business, or end up in the poor house. If you don't like damn dog, put him down,

 but don't harass me."

Here the most interesting is the fact, that this breeder belongs to the class of so called "reputable'

breeders. She regularly exhibits her dogs at the prestigious shows, has bred few top winners, and

advertises in the expensive dog magazines. The buyer obviously took for granted the breeder's

reputation, and this is why she did not insist on the contract. But, even if she had one, would it

change anything? Doubtful.

It is up to us, dedicated breeders, to speak up and fight for the welfare of our dogs.

A dog has been the closest human companion since the beginning of times and we owe it to him.

Especially a Hairless dog has probably the longest story to tell ( besides the wolf, hyena and

coyote - read this in my TRUE HISTORY OF THE HAIRLESS DOGS ( soon )

WHAT ABOUT:
What about the breeders, who willingly breed dogs with the genetic defects hoping that it would

not show in the first generation ( and often it won't). But the defect will reappear in the second

generation, and the next breeder is suddenly faced the problems he or she never envisioned and

is not ready to cope with?

WHAT ABOUT:
The breeders, who do not love the puppies they breed, but for the ONE, chosen as the POTENTIAL

WESTMINSTER WINNER, and raise the lesser quality "poor pets" unsocialized, knowing NO LOVE,

never petted, and scared of life and humans? If I would ask for the reason, and they would be willing

to tell us the truth, I bet this is what we would hear:
"I have 30 ( or 40,50 or more ) dogs. I breed 10 ( or 20, 30 or more litters a year ). I CAN'T LOVE THEM ALL!

WHAT ABOUT:
What about the breeder, who publicly condemns dog abuse, describing to whoever wants to listen,

how awful and terrible can be cruelty to the animals and giving many heartbreaking examples, yet at

the same time handing out her price list and announcements of the upcoming litters?

WHAT ABOUT:
What about the breeders, who routinely dump their dogs at the local shelters because of their age

and ailments?

WHAT ABOUT:
What about the well known breeders of the show dogs, who agree to give their buyers an exchange,

or a refund only on a condition that the dogs they are unhappy with, are put down first?

WHAT ABOUT:
What about the breeders, who claim that veterinary care is too expensive for them, and let the

"nature to be the healer"? Believe me, I have met many of the "reputable" breeders, some of them

even regular Westminster exhibitors, who would rather allow their dogs to die, than be willing to

spend a penny for the emergency veterinary visit. How many dogs have had their broken legs

improperly set by the incompetent breeder, or how many bitches in whelp and their puppies have

died as a result of this heartless and greedy attitude, is impossible to say exactly, but my guess is

that at least one third of all breeders/exhibitors do not have a regular veterinarian. Yet, they regularly

spend a fortune on traveling from show to show in their expensive motor homes, inside of which

even the dog crates are of the matching color with the interior carpeting.

AKC SAYS:

AKC says that most of the dogs in the DOG POUNDS come from puppy mills, and the backyard

breeders, but did anyone ever paused to think, where and how did all these unreputable dog

breeders got their start in the pure breed dog business in the first place?
AND THE ANSWER IS:
FROM THE "REPUTABLE" BREEDER.

We must start thinking not only about the first generation of our puppies that were successfully

placed in the good homes, but the next generations as well - what will happen to the puppies

produced from the bitch you just sold? Is the new owner, whom you now trust, going to keep the

same strict policy as you do, regarding the puppies that she or he shall breed one day and sell?

The Chinese Crested breeders already twice suffered a huge shock and humiliation. First, when a

famous breeder was found to have her dogs impounded by the Humane Society and was charged

with the dog abuse and cruelty, and a second time when another quite well known breeder put

up her dogs at the livestock auction in MO, advertising them as good "milkers", "whelpers",

"producers", and later again, when some "reputable" Chinese Crested breeders hurried to the

auction to take advantage of the low prices, especially for the pregnant bitches ( these were

purchased on the spot, during the preview). Shame on these buyers as much as on the seller! I

am afraid, that there will be more situations like these in the future, as the Chinese Crested breed

will finally move away from its Rare and Exotic Breed status. The Rescue workers already have

their hands full. What steps Chinese Crested breeders have taken to prevent the inevitable

disaster to happen? It is very educating to read the classified ads in the DOG FANCY to realize,

how many new breeders-sellers have appeared just in the last year, who advertise their stock as

"champion sired", or "from the famous lines" ( obviously not their own ), and for a buyer

convenience are offering the toll free 800 number.
"No contracts" or "No questions asked" is their motto. These businesses are the HEIRS to the

dispersed kennels, whose owners upon realizing that Chinese Cresteds are loosing their popularity,

and the market is going down, quit the business while there was still opportunity to make some profit.
For this ticking time bomb, who is to blame? Puppy mills? Backyard breeders? Or the "reputable"

breeders, who sold breeding pairs, and brood bitches for the top dollar during the heydays of the

Crested popularity? Even now, in order to sell their Cresteds better, many breeders use the same

old lie, that the breed is hypoallergenic. Is it really? How do they know? What research has been

done to make such statements?

AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL WHO INQUIRE ABOUT ADOPTING A CHINESE CRESTED
I get many letters inquiring about the Chinese Crested Dog Rescue Connection and asking about

the Cresteds offered for an adoption. Unfortunately many inquiries come from people wanting a

hairless male or a female( more often ) but unwilling to pay a full price for one.
Here is a typical letter:

"-Dear Ms. Morton,
I am writing about your Chinese Crested Rescue Connection. Could you send me an information

how to rescue one? I would like a pair, a male and a female, but not related. If you don't have

what I am looking for, tell me how much is to buy a pair of breeding pets?
Yours [name removed]
"

Or another letter:

"I have always wanted a show quality hairless female, but never could afford one. I decided to

adopt one, as I was told that they are free to a good home. Do you have a young hairless bitch

with very long crest? I don't want an old one as they are having already too many health problems.

I would like the best one less than a year old. Possibly small, that I could take her with me the town.

My dream is to have a black one with the black and white crest. I don't want a spayed one, as

I don't believe it is good for them. Enclosed is a stamped envelope for the reply etc...."

These letters indeed contain a stamped and pre addressed envelope, but nothing else. No phone

number, no information about the home, work, and no references of any sort. Just an envelope for

the fast answer. As I don't have the time to answer all the letters, and when I do it is usually over

and over the same answer, I decided to make a public statement.

" RESCUED DOGS THAT COME EITHER FROM THE SHELTERS OR THE INDIVIDUALS THAT

NO LONGER WANT TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR DOGS AND ABANDON THEM, ARE NOT THE

YOUNG, HAIRLESS FEMALES FOR BREEDING OR SHOWING, NOR BREEDING PAIRS READY TO MATE! "

These dogs are desperate for love; many have emotional or other problems, and must be carefully

taught how to trust humans again. Typical Cresteds waiting to be adopted are middle aged, or elder,

rather males, than females, and often the Powder-puffs.
They suffer from skin diseases, dental problems, some have phobias, and other psychological conditions,

like fear induced aggression. Adoption procedure and screening process is long and time consuming, and

the references of the prospective applicant carefully checked. Also, all dogs placed for adoption are either

spayed or neutered. For more information, please contact Cyndy Carroll from the
